yes, the place is nice and good for snorkling.
swim 100m away from the beach and you will have amazing marine life to see….
You can also take a boat trip to the islands that is better but also not for free

I love Karon beach. The best snorkeling is near a restaurant called “On the Rocks” at the southern end of the beach…(which by the way is quite good!)… Whenever I go, I always feel like I am swimming in an aquarium. Beautiful. It’s best to go in the morning for the best viewing opportunities.

I stayed at this resort, in January this year. It was really nice, Karon beach is one of the best on the island. Karon beach is really not a snorkeling kind of beach. There are all kinds of snorkeling tour packages that take you to the surrounding islands, these tour groups know where the best snorkeling is and it’s usually very resonable.
If snorkeling is your thing, the best snorkling in Thailand is in Surin National Park. There is a state runned resort there, you usually have to book months in advance for bungalows, but they have tents available. I heard from several people that the snorkeling in Surin is in the top 10 on the planet never mind the best in Thailand, from what I have seen I believe it!!!
You can drive, or take a taxi or bus to the Pier that takes you to Surin from your resort, if you email me I can give you directions.
Another group of islands near Phuket is Similan islands, which is a National Park too. This is a state runned resort also though the accommodations are much better than in Surin, the snorkeling is good but not nearly as good as Surin.
Good luck with your trip!! South Thailand is my favorite place on earth you can’t go wrong there!!!

Karon isn’t the best snorkelling beach. On Phuket Kata beach is better for snorkelling. Best is a day trip to Phi Phi (especially Phi Phi Ley – when there’s no tourists!) or to Similian Islands.
Good luck
