From my own research I’ve surmised that it is quite expensive to take taxi (or tuk tuk or otherwise) from Karon Beach to Patong Beach, perhaps as much as $10 US or am I off? Is there any cheap way to get from Karon Beach to Patong Beach and vice versa?
Regarding Hungrymon’s comment I’m not worried about people staring at me. I’m Chinese so I think I might fit in better than you so I might give those buses a try.

You are Way off. Samlor transportation bteween the two beaches runs on regular basis. top price should be 30 to 40 baht, US that is about $1 to $1.30. Samlor is an open truck with bench seats in the back. Taxi tops would run about $2.50.

With the falloff of tourists in THailand now, off by over 50% by some estimations, the prices of most everything have fallen almost as drastically. Of course negotiation is always required.

Yes, your estimation is ’somewhere there’.
I was in Phuket last year, there were no taxis there, just tuk tuk for tourists which cost 200B per way from Karon to Patong. Both ways will cost you 400B, rather expensive by SEA standards (no negotiations, prices are fixed by a cartel).
The ‘public buses’ which the earlier person mentioned although cheap are used by locals rather than tourists. As mentioned earlier, it is essentially an open truck with rows of wooden plank seats. I took it once and everyone was kind of ’staring’ at me and my friend, just have to get use to it. A minus point about the ‘public buses’ is that they are rather infrequent and unpredictable. I took it from Karon to Kata and was surprised that there was none going back!
In my opinion, the best is to rent a car, which was what I did later and it was really fun!
Hope u have a nice trip and Merry Christmas!
